We see a lot of carpentry flaws in our line of work and captured in the photograph below is a common one. This house was built in the 1950s but was resided in the 80s with new cedar clapboards. Unfortunately the installers used a smooth nail to fasten the clamps. Over time these nails begin to work themselves out of the wood – a function of temperature change and the contraction of wood in the winter months putting the squeeze on the nail, so to speak.
When we repaint this house in the spring we’ll pull all loose nails and replace them with stainless steel shanked nails – stainless to prevent rusting and shanked because the rings on these nails act as anchors and properly secure the nail in the wood.
