One of the most important things you can do for your home here in New England is properly prepare your outside space for the cold weather. Doing so creates a smooth transition come spring, lessening the chance for critical damage that can cost quite a bit to fix. We at Catchlight can ensure your home is ready for the bitter cold and ice.

Last month, we spoke briefly about seasonal work when talking about our handy work services, but what exactly does seasonal work or preparing your home for the winter mean?

It’s always a toss-up if it will be a mild or brutal winter, but regardless, your home needs to be in the best shape for the drastic temperature change.

The first thing for your home to survive the cold is ensuring your pipes won’t freeze. The outdoor valves must be properly shut off, drained, and sealed for the cold months to prevent pipes from freezing.

Another essential item to ensure your home’s safety is cleaning your gutters. With the fall producing so many leaves, they may clog your gutters. Proper cleanout of your gutters before the cold winter months allows rain and melted snow to drain properly and lessen the chance of significant damage.

Then, we have items like ensuring your air conditioners are properly sealed and covered for the season, lessening the winter damage risk. If you live in a home with older windows, make sure that they are weatherproofed or caulked so that the cold air doesn’t seep into your home. When that happens, you are uncomfortable, and that heating bill goes through the roof trying to keep up with that cold chill!

Lastly, all of that beautiful outdoor furniture needs to be stored for the winter. After seeing some wear and tear from the summer season, it’s good to refinish those pieces – whether it’s eliminating rusted metal, stripping and oiling tropical hardwoods, or just general wear and tear repairs. That way, come spring, when you put those pieces back out again to enjoy, they’re looking good as new!

All of these services and more are offered through Catchlight. There’s beauty in living in such a wonderland seasonal area, but with that beauty comes care and maintenance. The best thing you can do for your home (and wallet) is to ensure your home is prepared for the seasons ahead.
