They’re great questions, and the answer usually surprises homeowners. Fall can be one of the best times of year to complete an exterior paint project in Greater Boston. While many people assume summer is the “painting season,” experienced painters pay far more attention to weather conditions than the calendar itself.
Fall Can Offer Ideal Painting Conditions
Boston summers aren’t always ideal for exterior painting. While the weather may feel perfect for the beach, the intense sunshine, high temperatures, and humidity can make it harder for paint to cure properly. When siding gets too hot, coatings can dry faster than they should, affecting the quality of the finish.
In the fall, cooler days create ideal painting conditions. As long as temperatures remain within the manufacturer’s recommended range and we don’t have day after day of rain, paint will have a good opportunity to cure evenly and provide the long-lasting protection we want.
It’s Not So Much About the Date, It’s About the Forecast
One misconception homeowners have is that there’s a specific day when exterior painting simply stops, as if all of us professional painters had a unified “stop exteriors” day. In reality, we don’t schedule around the calendar; we schedule around the weather.
Before beginning any project, we consider much more than the daytime high.
We must take into account:
- Will overnight temperatures stay warm enough for proper curing?
- Is rain expected before the coating has fully dried?
- How much direct sunlight does each elevation receive?
- Will morning dew affect surface moisture?
- Has the siding had enough time to fully dry?
Those answers determine whether today is the right day to paint, not whether it’s June or October.
Fall Is Also a Great Time to Prep Your Home
Even if your home isn’t quite ready for paint, fall is an excellent time to address the issues that often shorten the life of an exterior finish. Small carpentry repairs are much easier to complete before another New England winter arrives.
