Paint gets blamed for a lot of things; it peels, bubbles, and cracks. It flakes off in sheets, and the immediate, astute reaction is usually, “Well, I guess it’s time to repaint.”  And while that’s often true, sometimes peeling exterior paint is simply your home’s way of letting you know something underneath needs attention.

Paint is remarkably good at protecting a home, but it’s also honest and often the first visible indicator that something’s off under the surface. But the trick isn’t simply painting over the problem (that only makes situations worse); It’s figuring out why the paint failed in the first place.

Peeling Exterior Paint – Moisture Usually Wins

If we had to pick one culprit, moisture usually fits the bill. Water has a remarkable ability to find the smallest opening. A tiny crack in the caulk around a window or a piece of exposed end grain on a corner board. A trim joint that’s opened just enough after a few winters; these are all opportunities for moisture to get in and do damage to woods and paints.

Once moisture gets behind the paint film, it begins breaking the bond between the paint and the wood. Eventually, you see bubbles, peeling, or blistering. That’s why we spend so much time inspecting homes before recommending paint. Sometimes the solution is as simple as replacing a deteriorated piece of trim or repairing an area of siding before painting begins.

Historic home restoration and paint work must be guided by this philosophy and approach: preserving original details starts with repairs rather than simply covering everything with fresh paint. This is at the core of all our Historic Home Restoration services.

Sometimes the Paint Isn’t the Problem

We’ve seen plenty of paint jobs fail long before the paint itself should have. Usually, the issue comes down to preparation. Old, loose paint wasn’t completely removed. Surfaces weren’t properly cleaned, and previous coatings had already begun to fail beneath the surface. Fresh paint can only adhere as well as the surface below it.

Our teams spend dedicated time preparing the exterior before anyone opens a can of paint. Scraping, sanding, caulking, repairing, and evaluating the home’s condition isn’t glamorous work—but it’s what determines whether the finish lasts.

Occasionally, preparation also uncovers small carpentry issues. A piece of rotted fascia or loose cladding may only require a relatively straightforward repair today, but left alone for another season or two, it often becomes a much larger project. This is why our Light Carpentry Services are often part of an exterior painting project rather than a separate conversation.

Sometimes, The Home Needs a Good Wash

Not every tired-looking exterior needs new paint. Over the years, siding collects pollen, mildew, airborne pollution, and enough dust to make almost any vibrant color look dull/faded.

Depending on the age of the exterior paint and other factors, we always recommend professional power washing as the first step before evaluating whether repainting is even necessary.  Removing built-up dirt and biological growth gives us a much clearer picture of the home’s condition and provides new coatings with a clean surface to bond to.

Greater Boston Doesn’t Make It Easy

Living in New England means your home’s exterior is constantly working. Winter freezes. Spring rains—humid summers. Bright UV exposure. Then everything freezes again; it’s one of the more brutal seasonal cycles a home can experience in the States.

Paint expands and contracts with the materials underneath it, but eventually every coating reaches the end of its lifespan. The difference is that a properly prepared surface often performs for years longer than one where shortcuts were taken. Good prep isn’t exciting—but it’s usually what separates a paint job that lasts five years from one that lasts well over a decade.

At Catchlight Painting, we’ve always believed the best exterior finishes begin long before the brush comes out. When you understand why paint failed—and fix that first—you end up with results that not only look better but last significantly longer; these beliefs and best practices have helped us remain one of the best painting companies in Boston for decades.
